Nyima Dolma

Nyima was from Dothang near the border of Tibet. She and her husband, who died in 1971, had one son. Nyima has lived in Dothang her whole life and was admitted to the Home because she had no income or anyone to care for her.

Phurpa was a nomad in Tibet and escaped to Manang where she worked as a servant for several years. Later she came to Pokhra and worked as a porter for 10 years. She and her husband Lobsang Dhamchoe have no income and are both in poor health. They were admitted together to the Home in January, 2008

Sonam and her husband came from Tibet in 1966 and had been farming in a remote village in north east India. They do not have children to take care of them in their old age so both were admitted to the Home.

After coming into exile, Ghakyi resettled in the Dorpatan refugee settlement in Nepal and she lived there till 2003 when she became too old to live alone.  She has no source of income and no children to care for her so she was admitted to the Home.

Karma lived with her husband in Orissa, India where they did road construction to earn their living.  After her husband died she became a nun and went to Dharamsala.  She has no one to care for her in her old age so she was admitted to the Home.

Dakpa was monk in Tibet but he was forced to marry and work in road construction. After he escaped he became monk again and worked as cook in the monastery. He came to live at the Home when he couldn't work any longer.

Karma was nomad in Tibet.  After he came to Nepal he lived as a farmer for 13 years and then for over 20 years he worked in a carpet factory and at Trichen Monastery before he was too old to work.  He is alone without anyone to look after him and he has no source of income.  He was admitted at The Home and has been very happy there.

Rabgye is from Nyinang in Tibet.  He came to Nepal in 1959 and worked in the carpet factory for several years until he joined the Indian army in 1967, serving for 13 years.  He retired due to health problems and had no one to care for him, his three children having died due to illness.

Jamyang was a farmer in Tibet where he has two daughters. He escaped to Nepal in 1964 and worked in road construction for five years before joining the Indian army where he served for 19 years.  He retired on medical ground, came to Nepal, and worked in carpet factory. He lost his job and had no income when the factory closed.

Lobsang Dhamchoe

Lobsang is from Lithang, Tibet.  After the Chinese occupation, he joined the resistance group, Chushi Gangduk in 1957but had to escape to Assam, India in 1959.   He worked in road construction in Gangtok and other places for many years and also worked in a restaurant in Mustang.  He and his wife, Phurpa Lhamo have no income and are health problems.  They were admitted to the Home in January, 2008.

Pema Choedon was a nomad in Tibet. Her parents died when she was young.  Pema escaped with her brother to Nyishang where they lived for 10 years doing farming and hiring themselves out to do odd jobs for other people.  Pema next went to Yolmo where she met her husband and they worked in road construction. Her husband passed away and being old and sick with no source of income, she was admitted to the Home.

Choephel was a monk in Tibet but had to work on road construction after the Chinese invasion.  He escaped in 1990 and went first to Dharamsala, then lived as a monk for 10 years to the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in South India.  He came to Nepal in 2000 and stayed at the Drupthop Monastery for 3 years. As an old monk, he did not have anyone to look after him and was admitted to the Home.

Sonam lived as a farmer and shepherd in Manang, Nepal for many years.  He joined the Tibetan resistance group Chushi Gangduk and afterwards worked as a security guard at a monastery for several years. He had to stop working when be became ill.  He has no source of income and on one to look after him.

Thupten was a monk of Drepung Loseling Monastery in Tibet.  He joined the resistance group, Chushi Gangduk in 1958 and after escaping to India, joined the Indian army where he served for 13 years.  After retirement, he ran a small restaurant but he spent most of his money on medical treatment for his wife who eventually died of cancer. He had no money left after paying his wife's medical expenses has no children to look after him.

Ngawang escaped to Nepal in 1979 and worked at the carpet factory as a packer, general helper and gatekeeper.  He has children in Tibet but has not seen them for over for 28 years. Due to his age he wasn't able to work any longer and had no income. He was admitted to the Home where he helps other residents when they become sick.

Ata was a farmer in Tibet before he escaped to Arunachal Pradesh in 1959.  He worked as a porter in Gangtok for few months before joining Chushi Gangduk from 1960 to 1974. He next engaged in petty business in Nepal until he became too old for this work.  He was admitted to the Home since he is alone and has no one to take care of him.

Passang was nomad in Tibet.  He and his wife had two daughters. After retiring,  he stayed in Nepal working as a gatekeeper of a carpet factory but lost his job due to health problem.  He is alone and has on one to take care of him.
