HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS

In addition to providing support to the Department of Health, The Tibet Fund is hosting a targeted campaign to raise urgently-needed funds for Delek Hospital in Dharamsala.  The Department of Health’s projects include those listed below. See our photo gallery for images of additional health care projects.

Maternal & Child Health (MCH)
This program provides reproductive health services, pre-natal and post-natal care for women and immunization for their children

Tuberculosis Prevention & Control
TB is the leading cause of grave illness and death among Tibetans refugees.  The Department of Health provides regular TB screening in schools and clinics to detect disease, health education to prevent infection, and DOT (directly-observed therapy) for patients to complete recommended therapy.

Frostbite Victims
Thousands of Tibetans continue to escape from Tibet each year. Most come in the winter when escape routes tend to be guarded less well due to the severe weather. Some refugees escape with only the clothes on their backs and are not dressed for such hazardous travel. They arrive at the reception center suffering from serious cases of frostbite, often leading to the amputation of toes, limbs and other extremities. The Tibet Fund has provided funding to help the frostbite victims receive immediate care, special prosthetics and long-term rehabilitation.
Drinking Water & Sanitation
Funds are provided to bring safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to some of the most neglected and affected settlements, including Mainpat, Ladakh Nyoma Camp, Orissa Camp # 3 and Yougyaling settlement. Our goal is to make safe drinking water available in all 53 Tibetan settlements in India, Nepal and Bhutan. See our photo gallery for more images of water projects.
