The Tibetan Delek Hospital

Tibetan Delek Hospital was founded by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1971 to offer much-needed health care to the Tibetan and local Indian communities in Dharamsala, India in the foothills of the Himalayas. This 45-bed charitable hospital provides general medical care with a special focus on Tuberculosis, the single most serious infectious disease that threatens the Tibetan population and new arrivals from Tibet .  Delek also has strong maternal and child health care programs, a service sorely lacking in the area.

Delek Hospital provides healthcare for thousands of Tibetans and Indians every year. User fees are kept exceptionally low so that the poor can afford treatment in this hospital. Delek survives mainly through private and foundation contributions but with rising costs and increasing demand for services from the growing population,  it is now at a cross roads. Delek needs your help. Lifesaving equipment and crucial upgrades are urgently needed to maintain the high quality of care for which Delek is well-known. Delek has survived for 35 years because of tremendous international support, monetary contributions, medical supplies, volunteers and plenty of good will, but our traditional support is not enough. $200,000 is needed to purchase failing and outmoded equipment.

Critical Needs Include:

Back-Up Generator
The power in Dharamsala is erratic, with rolling blackouts lasting for 8 hours or more. When this happens, the hospital cannot run its essential equipment, let alone turn on the lights. Delek needs a back-up generator, re-wiring and a maintenance contract to keep things safe.

Lab  Processor
The present automatic chemistry machine must be replaced. Breakdowns occur regularly. When this happens no chemistries can be performed for days at a time as the  repair engineer lives hundreds of miles away.

X-Ray Developer
X-rays are developed by an old fashioned hand-dipped technique rarely used today.  An automatic developer will improve patient care and radiation safety as repeat X-rays (from film developing errors) will become a thing of the past.

Ambulance
The working ambulance in Dharamsala is in very poor condition. Critically ill patients needing transport to the closest tertiary care facility 200 miles away have their care and safely compromised.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Equipment
The ability to evaluate chest pain with an EKG and monitor shortness of breath by measuring oxygen in the blood are essential for emergency diagnoses.

Laptop Computers and Digital Cameras
Today physicians need access to electronic medical texts and should have the able to digital photos of patients to specialists who may aid in the diagnosis of  complex cases
